Beguiled by Birbs: Moreno Monti and Matteo Tranchellini’s Chic!ken Project

“We felt like the chickens had been waiting for their moment in the spotlight.”

It all started in 2013 when Italian photographer Matteo Tranchellini was invited to shoot photos at a bird show in Milan. There he was so dazzled by all the fancy birbs on display, each strutting their stuff in their own avian way, that the CHICKen project was born.

Since then Tranchellini along with his friend and fellow photographer, Moreno Monti, have photographed so many splendid chickens and roosters that they’ve decided to publish a coffee table book of their gorgeous Gallus gallus domesticus glamour shots via Kickstarter.

The pair stress that their avian photo subjects, all impeccable show birds, are never leashed or forced to pose during photoshoots. It’s important to Tranchellini and Monti that the birds are allowed to naturally pose themselves and thus express their unique personalities.

The chickens in this book are the protagonists and are photographed as Top models because they had natural born talent.

Out of more than 200 photos taken of 100 different breeds of chicken, Tranchellini and Monti handpicked the 62 best shots for their beautiful CHICKen book.

In addition to the obtaining a copy of the book itself, the CHICKen book Kickstarter campaign offers a host of great pledge rewards, including posters, a calendar, journals, composite photos, postcards, and a variety of photo prints.
