Old Utensils Turned Beautiful Birbs: The Upcycled Artwork of Matt Wilson

Old silverware and other scrap metal become beautiful silver birds in the hands of South Carolina-based artist Matt Wilson. In addition to upcycling pieces of discarded metal, Wilson also uses pine cones, driftwood, and sometimes glass taxidermy eyes to further enhance his elegant avian creations.

Wilson says his work is a reflection of the environment he lives in. By working as a resident artist at Detyens Shipyard, he gives a longer life cycle to discarded materials. “The upcycled work I create is a testimony to the belief of conserving and appreciating our resources,” he explains.

Wilson has a knack and lots of patience for finding just the right objects, the perfect knives, forks, spoons, and other metal elements, that each have exactly the shape he needs to create recognizable and impressively lifelike animals without disguising the original purposes of those individual objects themselves.

Follow Matt Wilson on Instagram or Facebook to keep up with his latest upcycled creature creations, some of which he sometimes lists for purchase via his Etsy shop, Airtight Artwork.
